Mikayla Buford's Design Portfolio
WEBSITE DESIGN • 2022
Mikayla Buford is a design researcher, creative technologist and integrative designer who needed a more professional portfolio that matched her personality. Since she's a skilled developer, I created the design so she could build the final site with code.
KEY PROJECT ROLES:
-
Organized site structure and content placement
-
Created style guide detailing the visual elements of the website, including colors, type selection & hierarchy, etc.
-
Designed each page submitted as an annotated mockup detailing styles for typography, backgrounds, images, etc.

Kind Words
"I am so thankful that I hired Elizabeth to help me redesign my website. She is a great collaborator and visual designer. Working with Elizabeth was a more productive, enjoyable, and successful process than when I used to work on my website alone."

BEHIND THE SCENES
The Process
1
Review Current Portfolio
As I studied Mikayla's old site, a few things stood out to me: she has a cool and unique style (did you see that futuristic curvy font she used? Rad.), she has a ton of impressive projects and experience that needed to be showcased more, and her personality wasn't coming across.

2
Wireframing
I like to begin each project with simple black and white wireframes. Stripping back the colors, fonts and imagery helps us to organize the information well and focus on a great layout.

3
Pick Type Combos + Color Palette
I played with several bold display typefaces paired with something more readable for paragraph text (something I felt was lacking in the original design). In addition to exploring some "grainy gradient" backgrounds per Mikayla's request, I created some "8-bit" flat design patterns after being inspired by her digital art — and that is what won her heart for the final design!
